| Bio: | ![]() PF Media Review 4/17/2006 Peggy Lee Your Ticket to the Tropics Rating: 7.2 Peggy Lee, the band not the singer, was a shifting group of New York City musicians centered around lead singer Gidget Pei-Pei who managed to release 9 tracks, eventually condensed into an album, over 8 years. One other unreleased demo has surfaced which is also included on this re-release, which includes everything a fan of the band could hope for. This includes the extremely rare recording of DiscoLover, shown as a music video at Woodstock for a fake, doll musician, with vocals by Gidget herself. A few other tracks of her vocals appear here, but other than these 13 tracks, Peggy Lee, again the band, does not exist. Formed by New York City high school dropouts, the band originally had five minutes including Gidget and her girlfriend Maria. Gidget was the youngest, but the standout of the group. She has full songwriting credits for almost every song and co-wrote all the rest, including the demented cover of Peggy Lee's (the singer this time) Is That All There Is? Without the chords to impress, she relies more on feeling and attitude to get her point across. For the most part, it works. The songs pull from many musical genres that have separated any number of vocally challenged lead singers. The band was destined to be doomed from the start. Besides Gidget, the rest of the members were all music nerds, surfing for obscure vinyl and strumming their guitars all day. They had different lives and, more importantly, strong egos. Many more cohesive bands have fell apart as a charasmatic lead singer got the gully of the attention. (But it must have been difficult: Gidget has made a living out of being able to get attention and be known. Without doing much more than some design work, you'll see her in magazines sitting next to celebrities of the art world, kooky musicians, and even rock stars.) They never managed a single, successful tour. As Gidget rose in the ranks of NYC's club and art world as a socialite, the band's few concerts were loose affairs, playing at larger parties. Still, perhaps through her socializing, the band's name somehow slowly got out there on mixtapes and limited compilations. Eventually, in different incarnations and three small-run EP's, enough songs were hocked together for a 9 track release: Ticket to the Tropics. Irony, glamour, and attitude were hard sells in a grunge and gangster rap world of the mid to late 90's. Still, they found a small fanbase and became an instant cult classic (especially for breaking up for the last time just after its release). The releases suffer from a real lack of cohesion, but Peggy Lee has a certain definable sound; something most other bands never manage. While the re-release is sure to blow the wind out of obscure collectors' sails, the buzz of discovering a lost treasure is still strong. Peggy Lee, the band not the singer, will never reach a large audience. But to those of you willing to accept and love it, it'll be a friend ot you for life. Track Listing 1. I Know How to Hook 2.
